Common Cold
The common cold results from an infection caused by a virus. The infection can cause symptoms that include cough, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, and bronchitis. Children between the ages of 1 and 5 get more colds than any other age group. Because viruses are not killed by antibiotics, the best we can do is help the child with symptoms stay comfortable until the cold runs its usual course of about one to two weeks. Since direct contact (hand-to-hand) is the most common method of passing the cold virus from one person to another, washing hands often will help prevent a cold and perhaps the chances of passing it on to another person.
